Decades of Education

East York Elementary School is located at 701 Erlen Drive in Haines Acres. The school was planned after the development of the Fayfield and Haines Acres areas in 1955. A dedication ceremony was held in October of 1957. The new school contained twelve classrooms from kindergarten to grade six and an all-purpose room for lunch and physical education. Four years later, an additional four classrooms were added to the north end of the building.

In 1967, a large addition and renovation project was undertaken. Nine additional classrooms, a new and larger all-purpose room, art room, instrumental music room, faculty room, bathrooms, storage, and custodial room were added in a new wing on the east side of the building. The former all-purpose room was renovated to become a library. The new areas were also air-conditioned. The school enrolled 563 students from kindergarten to grade six.

A second renovation was completed in 1997. A new computer lab, a larger vocal music room, guidance office, teacher work room, and conference room were added. The entire building was air-conditioned with modern electrical and technology wiring installed to provide Internet access from all rooms. At that time, the building housed 485 students in twenty-two classrooms from second grade to fifth grade.

In the summer of 2001, art and music rooms were added to the north end of the building. By moving the art and music classrooms, space was provided for two additional fifth grade classrooms in the east wing.

Currently, East York has 375 students enrolled in sixteen classrooms. Support services are offered in Title I Reading and Math, English as a Second Language, Learning Support  and Gifted Support. The student day begins at 8:45 a.m. and concludes at 3:30 p.m. Students participate in related arts classes of Art, Computer, Music, Library/Computer, and Wellness. Related arts schedules will vary for each grade level.  The schedule operates on a six-day cycle which provides block planning periods for the teachers. Fourth grade students have the opportunity to take instrumental music lessons during the day. Fifth grade students may participate in string orchestra, band, or show choir. A breakfast program is offered every morning for all students, beginning at 8:30 AM. Students may use cash or their pin accounts.

Teachers participate in a variety of committees to assist with the governance of the school, including:  School Information Meetings and School Wide Effective Behavior Committees . Teachers work on team and individual goals which focus on promoting student achievement.

Parents are very active in the school. Throughout the school day, parents may volunteer to serve as student tutors and assist with classroom activities. The Parent Teacher Organization is very supportive of school needs. They provide funding for field trips, assembly programs, T-shirts for spirit days, school store, book sales, and a scholarship. The P.T.O. sponsors special events such as May Festival, East York Fun Nights and Family Nights at local restaurants.
