Membership in the National Honor Society is open to juniors and seniors. Eligible students are invited to submit an application for membership. A quota system is not used in selection. The criteria for membership is as follows:
Scholarship is represented by a minimum of 3.5 weighted grade point average.
Character is measured by integrity, behavior, ethics, cooperation, and adherence to all school regulations. Eligibility shall be determined only on the basis of teacher evaluation, the school discipline record and any known delinquency report.
Leadership is measured on resourcefulness, influence, responsibility, and self-confidence. It must be shown as follows:
- Takes constructive lead in classroom, homeroom, and school activities.
- Promotes worthy and proper school activities.
- Successfully holds school office and/or positions of responsibility.
- Contributes constructive ideas which improve the school.
- Definitely influences others for good.
- Shows academic initiative. (Leadership is not based merely on the holding of extracurricular offices, but on the effectiveness of duties performed.)
Service is to be shown as follows:
- Puts service to others above self-interest. Gives time, effort, talents, not for personal gain, but for the class, school, or community as a whole.
- Performs committee or staff work.
- Shows courtesy to teachers, other students, and visitors.
- Represents the school by actively participating in several school activities.
- Renders service to the community by volunteering a minimum of 50 verified hours. This excludes activities for which you receive grades or pay. A form is available in the guidance office for students to track their service hours.
SELECTION PROCESS:
- Students with a 3.5 minimum grade point average are invited to submit an application.
- Each member of the faculty is given a list of the candidates for membership. They evaluate students they know well using a four point scale on classroom leadership and character. (The lowest and highest score is dropped for each student so that one atypical score does not skew the student's average.)
- A faculty council independently reads all applications and evaluates the candidates, using a four point scale, on leadership and service to the school and community.
- To be accepted for membership, a student must attain at least a 3.0 in the areas of character, leadership, and service. Students are notified by mail of their acceptance.
