State Assessments
Keystone Exams
The Keystone Exams are end-of-course assessments designed to assess proficiency in three subjects: Algebra I, Literature, and Biology. In future years, pending funding, additional Keystone Exams will be administered. The Keystone Exams are one component of Pennsylvania’s system of high school graduation requirements. Keystone Exams will help school districts guide students toward meeting state standards.
Pennsylvania System School Assessment
The annual Pennsylvania System School Assessment (PSSA) is a standards-based, criterion-referenced assessment that provides students, parents, educators, and citizens with an understanding of student and school performance related to proficiency on the academic standards. These standards in English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Technology identify what a student should know and be able to do at varying grade levels.
Every Pennsylvania student in grades 3 through 8 is assessed in English Language Arts and Math. Every Pennsylvania student in grades 4 and 8 is assessed in science. The results obtained on these assessments provide valuable insight into student learning and help schools better understand how students are progressing toward Pennsylvania’s academic standards.

Helpful Information from PDE
PDE has compiled answers to frequently asked questions about the PSSA assessments, along with additional helpful resources. You can review the information provided by PDE here: PSSA FAQs and Resources.
Please note that PDE mandates that students not have their cell phones or other electronic devices (including smart watches) in their possession while they are taking the assessments. We ask that students leave these devices at home on testing day. Should a student bring a device to school, it will be collected until testing is complete.
Preparing for the PSSAs
Families can help students feel confident and prepared during testing by encouraging them to:
- get a good night’s sleep
- eat breakfast (breakfast is free for all students this school year)
- arrive at school on time
- stay positive and simply do their best
With preparation and encouragement, we are confident our students will continue to demonstrate their growth and learning. Thank you in advance for your support.
