Senior Spotlight: Alexia Purkanto

York Suburban High School senior Alexia Purkanto is closing out her high school career with three remarkable achievements that reflect both her academic excellence and global curiosity.

Alexia has been selected as a Chancellor’s Scholar at the University of Pittsburgh, the institution’s most prestigious and competitive award for incoming first-year students. This full scholarship (covering tuition, fees, and housing) is awarded to a select group of students from across the nation who demonstrate exceptional academic achievement, leadership, and intellectual ambition. As part of the program, Alexia will join the Frederick Honors College, where she will engage in specialized coursework, mentorship, and enrichment opportunities designed to prepare scholars for future leadership and nationally competitive fellowships.

Alexia has also been selected for the National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y), a highly selective program funded by the U.S. Department of State. This summer, she will spend six weeks in Taiwan studying Mandarin through immersive language instruction and cultural exchange alongside a small cohort of students from across the United States. With thousands of applicants nationwide and only a limited number of students selected per location, this recognition highlights Alexia’s commitment to global learning and cross-cultural understanding.

Lastly, Alexia was selected as this year’s Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) Good Citizen recipient. This recognition is awarded to one member of the senior class who exemplifies outstanding service to family, school, and community, along with the qualities of patriotism, dependability, and loyalty.

Congratulations, Alexia! We look forward to seeing all that you accomplish next!
