About Valley View Elementary
Valley View Elementary houses Kindergarten, First Grade, and Second Grade classes as one of two primary buildings in the York Suburban School District. There are approximately 330 students, 17 classroom teachers, an itinerant staff of 15, and a support staff of 23. Valley View is located at 850 Southern Road, York, PA 17403, on the same campus as the York Suburban Administration building and the District's High School .
The students’ day begins at 8:35 a.m. and concludes at 3:30 p.m. In addition to a regular classroom instruction, the students are instructed in the following related arts: art, music, library, wellness (physical education/health) and discovery and design. Our school follows a six-day cycle to ensure equal time for each area and also provides coordinated planning opportunities for teachers.
Our Early Childhood Center provides evidence-based reading practices, including instruction in phonemic awareness, reading strategies, Kid Writing, and word work. We utilize the Everyday Math program that is full of fun hands on activities that extend children’s thinking! In addition, we offer services in learning support, reading support, speech, emotional support, autistic support, occupational and physical therapies, and others as needed.
Our school mascot is Ready Teddy, a lovable teddy bear. He helps to teach the students proper school behavior. Our School-Wide Positive Behavior Support (SWPBS) system focuses on the four “Big Bee” rules: Be Responsible, Be Respectful, Be a Worker, and Be a Friend.
We begin each year with a Teddy Bear parade that involves our High School marching band and all of our students carrying their favorite furry friends. Throughout the year we have behavior celebrations that allow our children to sing songs, wear crazy outfits, and celebrate the special friendships they have made throughout the year.
Our school is fortunate to benefit from the High School Teaching Assistant Program. This is a program that allows high school students to experience an early childhood environment. We typically have 10 – 15 students “interning” at Valley View during the course of each school day. These students work with our children individually, in small groups, or by assisting with whole group instruction.
Our school is proud to say that we have a very active and supportive Parents’ Organization. The Valley View Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) begins their role as the students first enter Valley View. Each student is given a Valley View T-shirt that is worn each month when we have T-shirt day. Throughout the year our PTO assists with numerous functions. The PTO also funds assemblies and special hands-on activities, such as a day with the Maryland Science Center and a visit from the Baltimore Aquarium.
Valley View Elementary School was built in 1948 and operated as a Kindergarten through Grade Six school until 1983. At that time it was closed due to a drop in district enrollment. Valley View was reopened from 1989-2010 as an Early Childhood Center (grades K-T-1). The building closed for renovations during the 2010-2011 school year and reopened as a K-1-2 building for the 2011-2012 school year. Valley View is a school that promotes and encourages the development of the well rounded child by focusing not only on the intellectual, but the social, emotional, and the physiological growth of each child through developmentally age appropriate activities and instruction.
