Third Grade Curriculum Overview

Language Arts
The Third Grade Language Arts curriculum follows the Pennsylvania Core Standards of teaching children to read, write, speak and listen. PA Core standards in fluency, decoding, comprehension, vocabulary, writing, and responding to reading are addressed through shared reading, guided reading, self-selected reading, writing, and phonics instruction.
Throughout the year third grade students will:
  • learn to read independently by using before, during and after reading strategies during shared and guided reading experiences
  • increase ability to figure out new words through analysis of word parts and patterns
  • develop the ability to read text smoothly, accurately, and with an appropriate rate
  • read and apply new vocabulary
  • develop comprehension through the application of focus skills and strategies
  • read in all content area - understand and apply informational text and media in all academic areas
  • read and respond to literature through writing and discussion
  • actively participate in the writing process - prewriting, drafting, editing,  conferencing, revising and publishing
  • produce quality narrative, informational and persuasive writing
  • participate in speaking and listening activities as an individual and in groups


York Suburban School District uses Everyday Mathematics as the core instructional program and follows the Pennsylvania Standards of teaching children to understand and apply mathematical concepts.
Throughout the year third grade students will:
Numbers and Operations - Base Ten
  • Apply place-value understanding and properties of operations to perform multi-digit arithmetic

Numbers and Operations - Fractions

  • Explore and develop an understanding of fractions as numbers

Operations and Algebraic Thinking

  • Represent and solve problems involving multiplication and division
  • Understand properties of multiplication and the relationship between multiplication and division
  • Demonstrate multiplication and division fluency
  • Solve problems involving four operations, and identify and explain patterns in arithmetic


  • Identify, compare and classify shapes and their attributes
  • Use the understanding of fractions to partition shapes into parts with equal areas and express the area of each part as a unit fraction of the whole

Measurement and Data

  • Tell and write time to the nearest minute and solve problems by calculating time intervals
  • Solve problems involving measurement and estimation of temperature, liquid, volume, mass and length
  • Solve problems and make change involving money and usine a combination of coins and bills
  • Determine the area of a rectangle and apply the concept of multiplication and to addition
  • Represent and interpret data using tally charts, tables, pictographs, line plots and bar graphs
  • Solve problems involving perimeters of polygons and distinguish between linear and area measure

Students in third grade will be introduced to units and be provided with opportunities for self-selected projects in the areas of:

  • The Scientific Method


Social Studies
