School Safety Update – September 12, 2024

Good evening York Suburban Families and Students,

Earlier this week, school districts across the nation became aware of a troubling post being shared on social media, originating on Snapchat. The post refers to a threat to school safety and claims an act of violence is going to take place at several schools.

The initial post resulted in rumors and the spreading of inaccurate information, which, understandably, resulted in anxiety and fear. For others, the message created an opportunity for copycat behavior, which has been witnessed in neighboring school districts. Despite any rumors you or your students may have heard, none of the schools in the York Suburban School District have been threatened.

Even though our schools have not been targeted and law enforcement has determined that there are no credible threats against them at this time, posting threats on social media can cause a great deal of stress for our students, families, staff, and community. I am asking for your assistance in how we, as a school community, respond to these situations this school year.

If you or your child become aware of any potential threat posted to social media or anywhere else, please notify a school staff member or trusted adult right away. The community can also utilize the Safe2Say Something Hotline (1-844-723-2729) to report any suspicious behavior or make a report online at www.safe2saypa.org. We take all threats seriously, and by reporting them, law enforcement can thoroughly investigate and assist the District in determining an appropriate response.

In addition to reporting concerns, we encourage families to check in with their students and talk to them about what they are doing on social media and how they use it. Please emphasize that making a false threat is a serious offense that can result in severe consequences.

While this week’s social media post was determined to be a hoax, as a school district, we have a huge responsibility to protect our school community today and every day. We take that responsibility very seriously and will continue to stay engaged, following through on any rumors that may pose a threat.

Sincerely,

Scott T. Krauser, Ed.D.
